Trends for
2008 Fall/Winter

SUITS  It must be as a result of the immense influence of the AskAndy website!  -- More and more peaked lapels!!

The Peaked Lapels are a Part of the “English Gentleman”  look for Fall.  Seems that everyone is going Ralph.

SPORT JACKETS go soft like sweaters.

NECKTIES  elegant prints, plaids and stripes in narrow widths.  Seasonal fabrics (wool and cashmere).

OUTERWEAR  Fall gives us “Dramatic Coats” where the the coat is presented as the focal point, with longer lengths, peacoats*, shearling, lots of wool in clean and dressy styles.

*THE PEACOAT!  Naval style has all the elements of the perfect modern coat – big lapel, double breasted, shorter length

QUILTING! Puffer jackets and vests get dressed up in leather, wool or shiny fabrics

SPORTWEAR adds little details like attached braces, ribbon taping, provocative prints.

BOLD KNITS Chunky sweaters, in all styles including a resurgence of the shawl collar, and worn instead of shirts.

DENIM focus is on “authentic” vintage finishes, trendy colors (royal blue!) and novelty washes like marble.

STREET FASHION steps back from last season (less is more) with clean looks, darker denim, lots of emphasis on outerwear, including varsity and motorcycle jackets.

BAGS are more masculine and understated.

RESORT WEAR is surf influenced with bright prints, drawstring trunks.

UNDERWEAR piping in contrast colors, punchy colors, edgy prints, bold logos.

HATS  the Bowler is making a return!  AKA as the Derby.

FABRICS

WASHED LEATHER -- Water and leather do mix, hides are treated for a wrinkled worn-in look

WOOL LIKE -- Synthetic wool gives benefits of high tech like water and wind resistance.

COLORS AND PATTERN

Burgundy -- all kinds of burgundy for menswear, from claret, to tawny port to madder brown in soft sheen, matte, hombre stained.

MONOCHROMATIC BLACK   Is black the new black?  All tones worn together. Very somber!

PLAIDS  Shirts, suits, coats, ties, vests all in plaids and sometimes discordant!

Here is a recent testimonial about THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MEN'S CLOTHES:

"I received The Encyclopedia of Men's Clothes this afternoon, Andy, and it's terrifically useful! Thank you for explaining how to access the various disk components--your instructions helped me to quickly navigate the book.

I particularly like your logical, straightforward approach to each section. I mean to say, it really makes sense to explain why something matters, then how to care for it once you've chosen to incorporate the thing into your life, and then to include a history of the item, which focuses the reader's attention on its intrinsic value to a gentleman's kit.

Your book is more useful than Esquire's Encyclopedia of 20th-Century Men's Fashions, because the latter serves as a chronicle not a guide. The Encyclopedia of Men's Clothes provides a road map for fellows who wish to understand the choices they make, and who wish to make choices they understand. I am simply delighted with your book!"
