    "NOW" versus "THEN" = 1984 vs. 2014

Such and evocative thread. Miss those days. However, the timing is impeccable for today is the day I semi-retire after 35+ years of the Wall Street rat race.

    not too 'tuxedo-ish'?

I don't think it will be tuxedo-ish at all. It will be a suit and a bow tie. And if you have described the rest of the party goers attire accurately, they will probably know the difference also.

    Mixing brown and black?

I usually adhere to the the rule. I match my belt to the shoes. Try to coordinate my watchband also. My socks, however, will be matched to my suit. If I'm in sport jacket and slacks, then its argyle heaven for me.

So, you are concerned about other's attire in a restaurant...

To the OP, You mentioned that the child was not terribly loud or disruptive. Maybe the parents had tested the waters already and found their child to be generally well behaved at nice restaurants. But I can also see your point. Worrying that an outburst might be forthcoming from an child...

    Dad's Rules We Ignore

My dad, who just turned 88, wasn't too much for the sartorial. However, there are a few pictures of him with my mother when they were in their late 20's - early 30's where he somehow put it together and looked absolutely top drawer. P.S.
