Are artificial fibres ever acceptable in a coat?

My understanding is that a small amount of nylon, polyester, etc. can strengthen wool fabric. More than once, I've ripped my overcoats at the stress points (e.g. pockets, vent, belt loops). So, I would welcome a quality wool/blend overcoat. An 80-20 blend sounds about right.

Why did anyone think this was a good idea?

The matching outfits are bad enough, but, the matching hats are double-facepalm bad.

Ok, boat shoes are not good for walking

In recent years, I've been unimpressed with the durability and comfort of my Sperry boat shoes. My newest pair of boat shoes is made by ECCO. They cost a little more than Sperry, but if you shop around you can find them on sale. I like my ECCO boat shoes a lot, however I wouldn't wear them for...

Something I've been struggling with -- The Suit without a Tie --

You're reading a lot into what I write. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. I still wear white dress shirts, even though some AAAC members hate white shirts and make disparaging remarks about white shirts.

Something I've been struggling with -- The Suit without a Tie --

There was a time when wearing a tie was following the crowd. I've worked primarily in "conservative" offices in the finance/insurance industry, where dressing well is appreciated. Over dressing is not. After the switch to business-casual dress codes, just wearing a white dress shirt (with no...

Something I've been struggling with -- The Suit without a Tie --

It doesn't mean you that can't wear a suit & tie. However, if you're the only person wearing a suit & tie, you could be mistaken for a pretentious schmuck. This is especially true in the large offices where I've worked, where there have been more than a hundred men dressed in business-casual...

Something I've been struggling with -- The Suit without a Tie --

Some men may see it this way, but I don't. I love ties and love to wear ties. However, for casual occasions, I usually go without a tie. In the workplace, I wore ties to the office five days a week for over twenty years. Then, business-casual dress codes did away with suits & ties in the office.

Beautiful! They're almost too beautiful to wear. Without the broguing, are these still considered less "formal" than a plain cap-toe shoe?

Something I've been struggling with -- The Suit without a Tie --

+1 The suit, the shirt, the shirt collar, and the occasion are factors. My three cents: The issue with an open collar shirt is not about wearing it with a suit. The issue is that many (most?) men don't know how to pull off an open collar, even with a sport coat. Some AAAC members say, for...

Well, I would never suggest that you can do whatever the heck you please. However, as in all things, one must use good judgment, and not be a slave to rules. I've noticed a number of AAAC members bend the "rules" as they see fit, whilst a number of AAAC members seem to make up "rules" to justify...

    Obsessive Tie Purchasing Disorder

Holy cow, that's a LOT of ties. I don't think I've ever had more than 50 or 60 ties at any one time. Last year, I purged about 25 "old" ties from my wardrobe. My thinking was that I had too many ties anyway. I thought refreshing my tie collection with a few new ties would be a no-brainer, not...

The Elements of Style: 10 Rules

One could interpret rule #10 in different ways. I took it to mean that a man should wear clothing that looks right or "natural" for him. IMO, some clothes or styles look out of place on some men. Well, Sir, you are thinking outside the box. I don't wear suits, ties or dress shoes to the...

The Elements of Style: 10 Rules

The only shoes I wear without socks are boat shoes, and only around the house. Sandals? The last time I wore sandals, my daughter RAOTFLOL. She was about 10 years old at the time. Now, more than 15 years later, her response would be the same. She has very good taste, and I trust her judgement.
