bigger is better - article about changing foot sizes with age/weight/etc.

The Daily Mail is of course a rather tawdry affair, but this article about feet sizes changing with time/age/weight is interesting. Perhaps someone can find a link to the original study...

    May Acquisitions

Here's two recent military surplus e-Bay purchases: Russian/Ukranian pea jacket and Swiss greatcoat (with roll-up sleeves!) I have a USA made polo coat on order with BB and apparently it's arrived in the Toronto store. I will drive up on Saturday to pick it up. I wanted one of the USA...

Allen Edmonds fall 2011 - new offerings!

The new AE catalogue is out for Fall 2011 and there's some interesting new models and variations on older ones which I think we should be paying attention to. Here's the link to the catalogue in PDF format (size 7MB, warning for dial-up connections): . Here's a roundup of a few models that...

BB OCBD vs BB Black Fleece OCBD

Recently I sold my unworn must-iron BB OCBDs to a guy in Europe since I never wore them and they were taking up space. Great shirts and I still have a couple that I did wear, but they are a bit too billowy and I have found with the traditional fit that the collars are too small and the torsos...

Edward Green shoes at Robert Jones, Toronto

I guess this is old news since I see someone from London(!) has mentioned it in passing in a previous thread, but, for those who don't already know, Robert Jones Menswear in Toronto is stocking several Edward Green laceup models (no slipons). I asked and was told they are trying to arrange a...

New/Old models from AE for 2010....

For information, AE has got the and models up on their website. The Walton is a split toe, double-sole (black and chili calf) and the Cambridge is basically the McAllister but in shell cordovan and brown suede and a thicker sole. In other news, the Everett penny loafer is gone.

Allen Edmonds advertising: how it should be done...

Some of us have been bemoaning the way AE photographs their shoes - they look crappy in catalog photos but awesome in real life. Good photos and presentation sells stuff. Here's some screenshots from historical AE catalogs with have much better presentation of their footwear than today's tepid...

    Vintage Alden: Model 1811 loafers...

Ethan at O'Connells sent me these photos of a pair of 'vintage' Alden loafers the other day. He says he discovered them while digging around for something else (those of you who've been to the store know what I mean by that). Anyway, the model is 1811 and Ethan says they date from the 1970s or...

G Bruce Boyer on Gucci & tassel loafers...

Here's some interesting historical perspective on the introduction of Gucci slip-ons and tassel loafers from G. Bruce Boyer (writing in 1985). I'd definitely like to see what the earliest Gucci shoes looked like.

Photos of new AE Everett penny loafer...

Finally some good photos of the new AE Everett penny loafer (source onlineshoes.com). I saw these in real life recently and they look really good. Personally, I'm glad AE has finally stopped doing that stupid puckered side stitching to fasten down the flat straps, and I'm also glad this model...

Zombie survival sheet! (What do YOU need to survive?)

Okay, let's say the inevitable zombie uprising/invasion has happened... What equipment do you need to survive? Who do you want as a sidekick to help you? Where will you locate your bunker? What is your escape vehicle of choice? What is your theme song? Here's a blank form for the...

    Vintage penny loafers: different proportions?

One of the TNSIL bloggers, The Trad, has arranged for some photos from a 1965 school magazine to be scanned. Looking at one of the photos (below) I was reminded of some older BB penny loafers that were on eBay recently. Perfectly genuine unlined penny loafers, but of much different proportions...

What model is this Allen-Edmonds "demi-chasse" lace up?

I found this AE shoe on the Yahoo Auction site from Japan (see photos below). I think it's an incredible looking shoe and strongly resembles the Weston demi-chasse (perhaps even better). Unfortunately, I don't understand Japanese so I could not read the description. Can anyone identify this...

    Questions about AE Randolph (shell)...

I finally saw a pair of these in Toronto a few weeks ago and I was impressed. The AE shell cordovan seems to have a stronger brown shade than the Alden/BB shell, and the leather used for the soles appears to be better than what AE uses on their calfskin shoes. However, I know from...

(new) Bass "Gilman": Is this the penny loafer we've been waiting for?

In my usual digging around for shoes on the internet, I noticed tonight this new Bass model called the "Gilman" on OnlineShoes.com, a site which always has new models on their site before anyone else. Here's the links to the black and brown models: Don't pay any attention to the...

    Harold Powell full-strap loafers...

Harold Powell is offering full-strap loafers which I think have nearly perfect proportions for this sort of shoe. They come in black and brown calf, plus a "fake" croc skin. Does anyone know where these are made? Any info on overall quality? I imagine they're middle-of-the-road at best, but I...
