I miss debates that give the candidates an opportunity to unpack what they believe, what they stand for, and what they would pursue in enough detail and with sufficient uninterrupted time that they should have no need to back track, recant, or reframe on the next day unless they have truly flip flopped, in which case they need to be held to account by the press. It is a sad truth that the current format is in many respects a creation of the press, pandering to a public that largely seeks sound bites, a short event, a cheering squad audience, and at least a hint of blood sport.

The whole business seemed reminiscent of professional wrestling! Unfortunately, it wasn't "kayfabe." All three parties involved could have benefited by studying and adhering to Robert's Rules of Order and making all their replies directly to the moderator, as proper parliamentary procedure demands. You would think Biden, for all his years in the Senate, would at least have been aware of this and insisted that this protocol be followed.

In the extremely unlikely event I were called upon to moderate one of these debates, I would make sure to equip myself with a large heavy gavel and start pounding whenever the participants got out of line or off-track.

I am inclined to think Biden "won" simply by clearing the low bar the Republicans had set with all their jokes about "Joe Dementia" and not lapsing into utter incoherence.

Did anybody else here find Joe's comment, "I am the Democratic Party," reminiscent of Louis XIV's immortal line, "L'etat, c'est moi!"?

I studiously avoid viewing political absurdities such as debates and "states of the Union" speeches, so I did not watch Tuesday evening's debacle.

Love your reference to the Sun King, however!
