I was home in the US for Christmas but I am heading back to the UK for grad school.

There is a good chance I'll be there for the summertime and might need formal attire. Should I pack a linen or cotton suit/sport jacket? Or would a typical year round wool suit/jacket work(which I already have back at my flat in London)

Thank you in advance for the advice!

I've been fine with 3-season worsteds in London in the summertime. Linen and cotton are for casual occasions in hot places, not for dressing up in London.

Can you better define “formal attire”?

For What types of occasions are you dressing?

As you are aware, the summer weather in London can be all over the map.

Cheers,

I would be dressing for things like internships, interviews, and academic conferences.

So I would define it as business professional-suit or jacket and tie.

Then you definitely need a business suit in blue or grey. A linen or cotton suit or jacket would not be business professional attire in London.
